Story
Mr. Brown is sort of a return to familiar territory. You may recall the Sidearm, a Clippy original
from 2024. That drink was a coffee Manhattan
with Amaretto and chocolate bitters. It
was an adaptation of the now-classic Revolver cocktail from the early 2000s,
which was bourbon and coffee liqueur served up.
Mr. Brown appears to be another riff on the Revolver, adding a hint of
vanilla and Angostura spice, as well as being served over a rock of ice rather
than up. The transformation turns it
into a slow evening sipper, perfect for these autumn nights. Mr. Brown was created by Ms. Franky Marshall in
2011at New York City’s Clover Club. The
elevator pitch for this drink is “vanilla-kissed coffee Old Fashioned”. Its name probably comes from either the cocktail’s
appearance or the minor character from Reservoir Dogs, but all I can
think of when I hear the name is the book Mr. Brown Can Moo by Dr. Seuss.
Recipe
0.75 oz coffee liqueur (I used Mr. Black)
1 teaspoon vanilla syrup or liqueur (I used Giffard Vanille de Madagascar)
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash orange bitters
Orange twist
-Stir ingredients with ice and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Express orange twist and garnish.
